As soon as the final Ubuntu 11.10 released has been made available I downloaded it. I was mainly curious to see if the many problems I did encounter with the Beta 1 release had been solved in the October’s final release. So here I am, again, with a short post just to put in evidence how things have been fixed since the beta release test.
First impressions
There are beta versions that are almost final releases and others that literally fall apart, Ubuntu 11.10 Beta 1 was definitively of the latter type. In the little time passed since then things are enormously improved. Of the many errors experienced while testing the beta version none appeared with the final release. Also the “Dash” window, the one Unity uses to launch applications and search files, is now rendered correctly without the resize problem it first showed on the small EEEPC screen.
Unity’s configuration possibilities are really scarce but, at least, by changing backdrop and theme you can make it look almost nice
Conclusions
Unity’s and Ubuntu’s overall stability has been greatly improved at a level of what can be called “final” version. I’m not a Unity fan but, even I still don’t like some of its mechanisms I have to admit that it’s definitively matured, not enough to convince me to leave my old NBR installation but, indeed, a good step forward.
Thanks for visiting Ed!
Posted by musante at October 19, 2011, 3:25 pmI noticed in the screenshots that you were using a wired ethernet connection. Were you able to get the wireless to work? I am still trying to get that up. Other than that, 11.10 works well for me.
Posted by Steuen at October 22, 2011, 4:51 amThanks Steuen for visiting, I didn’t explicitly test wireless network this time. EEEPC 900 hardware has been fully supported since version 9.10 (http://musante.i.ph/blogs/musante/2009/11/17/installed-ubuntu-910-nbr-on-eeepc-900/) I don’t see any reason for it not working in 11.10 (I haven’t upgraded yet only because I don’t like a lot Unity interface).
On which hardware are you planning to install Ubuntu?
Ubuntu 11.10 on EEE PC 900 is frustrating and painfully slow! Don’t do it
Posted by mian at November 13, 2011, 8:15 amHi Mian! Sorry to hear so. It didn’t seem to me so painful but things may appear different with different needs and different users, thanks for sharing. Have you installed/upgraded your EEEPC to 11.10 or just tested live like i did? I suppose that switching to Unity 2D, or installing XFCE, might ease things a little they both work fine on my (even slower) Sempron 2400.

i like it!
Hi, I have a EeePC 900 and wonder what partition scheme you use? As you know the Eee 900 has two drives: a 4gb and 16gb. How do you set it up?
I was thinking of:
On the 4gb:
/boot 250mb
/swap 2gb (as I have 2gb ram)
/tmp (what left)
16gb:
/ (so root)
What do you think?

Your partition scheme is good for speed, but write intensive partitions like swap and /tmp could wear out your 4GB disk, and you can’t replace it since is soldered on the MB.
I, more simply, placed all installation on the 16GB since I left the 4GB disk for a minimal Windows installation I use sometimes (there is a couple of old games I still like to play every now and then).

I’m getting enticed to slow down on using my Black Mac and begin Ubuntu again. I’ll definitely go back using Linux on the next PC that I can get hold of.
Thanks for the information.
